The Canfield Mohawks lived near the stream on Canfield Road, Chilson [Ticonderoga], NY, moving from Keeseville, NY. The Canfield Road, in Chilson,where the Native American burials are;
Native American burial grounds are in Chilson at:
1) west side of Putt's Pond beyond the Walter Hunsdon homestead
2) on the property of Patrick and Judy Donovan on rise of ground east of their homestead on Canfield Road on the Huestis lot [This site has been surveyed and photgraphed by Red Hawk of Fort William Henry.] Gunning, Lois, "Up on Chilson Hill", Burlington, VT: Queen City Printing, 1999; p.130

A Canfield Mohawk reportedly went to fight in the Seminole Wars .

Pusipher family tradition says that Jane Pusipher was of Native American descent.

Where is French Hill?

There is a stone marker on old Gene Phillips' farm at the top of Bullrock Road. {Chilson]
Native Americans were living at Eagle Lake in early 1800's on Crown Point Bay. [They called it Long Pond]. `Indians in Adirondacks were around lakes and ponds in Chilson until mid-1800's." ibid Gunning

French hill,I believe, but am not 100% is in the Keeseville area.

Do you by any chance have any of the native canfield names? I know daniel and his children, but don't know his wife.

I know we have Pulsipher in our line and Morehouse

French Hill 4.5 miles west of Keesevile

Are you people still working on this line of Canfield's?
I know there were several families of that name living in the Essex Co., NY area since the late 1700's and wonder if you are descended from one of them?

Ancestry Posts for James Canfield family

Lorenzo m. Canfield was born in Jefferson County, NY on Nov. 22, 1819. His wife is Jane Scott she was born in Tompkins Co, NY on Dec 4, 1826 (?there is a smudge by the 4)
their children are Washington B, Louisa Jane, Lucy Ann, Erie M, Encio (jo?), Jerome. I have all this info in their old family bible Lorenzo and Jane started when they were married so i don't have anything further back. but i have more info on their decendents. Which way are you related? we come from Erie. If you have other ? i will try to help you out. also please let me know any info you may have on them thank you.

****************************************************

My wife is also descended from Erie M Canfield, a GGranddaughter through Erie's son, Claude Cecil Canfield. I have a fair confidence that Lorenzo's parents were Erastus Canfield and Thankful Maxon. That information was given to the recorder at Chikaming Twp, Berrien, MI when Lorenzo applied for a marriage license at age 70 to marry Margaret Taylor, b. PA.

I'm very impressed that you have Lorenzo's family bible. I confirm all of his children's names, with the added detail that Washington's middle name was Bennette, and another spelling of Encio's name was Eucie. I also have some of their spouses and descendants.

Would you be able to send me (or post) a digital photo of the page(s) with the names in the bible? That would be a neat supporting document.

I would be interested in all of the descendants info that you have, and would be glad to share what I have in that area, if you're interested.

sorry i never saw this post earlier. yes i would be be very interested in any info you may have and also i will try to get you copies of the pages. i made copies a while back so i will try to scan you a copy from those (not sure how good they will turn out)or even i could mail you a copy if interested (we do not touch the bible anymore than we have to it is starting to fall apart) also there are some old tin pictures in there. i also have copies of those too. i have no idea who they are but they do look like some of my husbands cousins. you can email me at cmcsbcarc@aol.com with your address or email and i can send them to you and any info you may have to share you can send there thank you

*****************************************************
I googled Lorenzo Canfield and Jane Scott. I got Noktree.com entry that said that Lorenzo's parents were James Canfield and Susannah Blake. James' parents were Benjamin Canfield and Marion Barton. Benjamin lived in Ontario County NY. He died in 1799 (I believe I have an extract of his will). Hope this helps. *****See note below!!

Pat Hovell

Hello Pat Hovey:

I have since discovered Lorenzo Canfield who mar: Jane Scott was not the son of James & Susannah (Blake) Canfield. There were several Lorenzo Canfield's but this particular Lorenzo I was looking for and his family did not appear in any of the old Canfield genealogies - it's a new line.

Thank you for being so willing to help me with your information - much appreciated.
